Eulogy, read by Jennifer Lee RUSH, 5th September 2008

As we have heard, Maree was born in Sydney where she spent most of her childhood. At the time of her birth her father was overseas fighting in the 2nd World War.

She grew up with her brothers John and Roger and her sister Betty Anne who is with us here today.

Maree once described her childhood as very normal and quiet. It is interesting that she described it this way as her father was overseas for much of her early childhood and there was a period where she and her siblings had to live in a Red Cross Home due to her mothers illness. Her mother died when she was 12 years old and soon after leaving school, her father died. Like so many others born at that time they were quite a poor family but didn't consider themselves poor as they had food and clothing. It is typical of maree that she did not consider herself hard done by.

For a time after her mothers death she was brought up by her aunt and uncle in Taylors Arm, which is inland from Nambucca Heads on the New South Wales central coast. When her father remarried she again lived in Liverpool.

Her first job was a clerical position in an office in the city area of Sydney. Soon after her 16th birthday her father died and again she went to live with her aunt and uncle. It was at this time she left her first job and attended a business college for 6 weeks which enabled her to get a typist/receptionist job for a local church paper which she did for about a year. She then realised that she really wanted to be a nurse so he got a job as a nurses aid and at the same time went to night shcool for 6 months to gain her nursing qualifications.

She was 18 years old when she met Bill who introduced the innocent city girl to a more adventurous life. They lived and worked around the New South Wales/Queensland border in the Goondiwindi area before returning to Sydney where they got married in 1962.

Again they headed bush and lived and worked in a lot of small towns and stations in Western Queensland and New South Wales. For many years Bill and Maree lived and worked on their boats spending most of their time fishing the Queensland coast. Together Bill and Maree had four children, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Judging form their stories of life at the time it is obvious that they were not surrounded by worldly possessions. However it is also obvious that Maree regarded these times as one big adventure, a time she looked back on with fondness, filled with excitment and challenges.

Some ten years ago they put a stop to all the travelling and settled in Raglan where they were later joined by their daughter Christine.

Maree was devoted to her husband Bill and was rarely not by his side. Similarly she was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and never forgot averyones birthday or toher important dates. Her failing health did not stop her from regularly visiting her family and friends.

We will miss her wit and her wisdom, her common sense approach to life and the way she had of making us all feel special.

And if she was here now she would tell us all to get stuffed.
