    • I am unsure if Alexander and Penelope married in Kirkcubright before leaving or perhaps they married onboard the "«i»Emperor«/i»" I have never been able to find a record for their marriage as yet. Family stories have it that they married then a couple of months after the marriage sailed for Australia. On the birth records of their children it states they where married 7 Feb 1851 in Kirkcudbright.

  • Notes
    • Penelope was the sixth daughter of Peter Hay and Mary Isabella Mitchell. Peter and Mary had seven daughters the last being born in 1836 they had no sons. Mary passed away in 1838 of child bed at the very early age of 35. Penelope at the time only being 4 years of age, Peter never remarried so he would of finished bringing up the girls on his own with the help of Mrs Glendinning the house keeper. It's unsure as to how long Mrs Glendinning was the house keeper for but most certainly was there in the 1841 census right up till the time of her death in 1955. She must have been very valued as on the headstone of the Hay family it also makes mention of Mrs Glendinning. It's also unsure if she was related in any way.

      «b»1841 Census«/b»: Milburn Street, Kirkcudbright.

      Peter Hay 40
      Agnes Glendening 50
      Isabella Hay 15
      Agnes Hay 13
      Marion Hay 9
      Penelope 7

«b»By the time the 1851 census«/b» was being done Penelope and Alexander had already married and left Scotland. In the census for 1851 Peter Hay 54, Plumber was living at King Street, Kelton, Kirkcudbright, along with Agnes Glendynnan 63,Domestic Servant and the only girl still at home was Mary Hay 14, Scholar.
Notice all the different spellings in the census and the headstone transcription of Agnes Glendinning.

«b»(From Sally Frater nee Jones letter dated 1975)«/b»
Penelope Hay was 1 of a family of 5 or 6 girls, she ran away from home a few times and was finally brought home by a family friend who persuaded the family to let her marry. She married Alexander Frater she was only 16 year old.
