Topic: An Amazing life or an Amazing Yarn?
      http://www.greatwaraviation.com/forum/index.php?topic=2304.0

As some of you know I am in the middle of writing a book on Australians that served with the RNAS during the Great War.

One chap that has become a favourite of mine is Robert Guy Frater. His mother was Barbara Baynton (2nd marriage) who became quite famous as an author. A foreword in a reprint of her book "Bush Studies" alerted me to the life of her son Robert Frater.

The author of this foreword was Baynton's grandson and it he writes of his uncle's adventures. At 15 Robert enlisted as a trooper and went to South Africa, after the Boer war he travelled to China and served with a warlords army returned to Australia to work as a journalist on Brisbane's Courier Mail, served in the Archduke Ferdinand's bodyguard at Sarajevo, and then somehow ended up in the UK in time to join the RNAS were he served as a gunner on seaplanes and the larger Felixstowe "boats"

Now is this a yarn? While no male Frater appears in the murray papers, his sister served as a nurse in the Boer War, and there is a Robert Guy Fraser....coincidence?? I have found no records of him entering or leaving China, but that doesn't rule him out of being a mercenary....does it? As for the Archduke, I am yet to find records of the make up of his body guard, perhaps one of our forum members can point me in the right direction.

I have been in contact with the family and he is even a bit of an enigma to them.

I hope to learn more, and confirm the family yarn about him before I put the book to bed.....

Robert Guy Frater, her second son, inherited her adventurous spirit: he went to the South African War at 15, raised soldiers for a Chinese warlord, served in the Archduke Ferdinand's bodyguard at Sarajevo and, with his brother, fought with the British Army in World War I.
      (Notes From: Joanne Flack 2013)
    • (Medical):New End Hospital - The workhouse and infirmary at New End became a military hospital during the First World War, and received such facilities as an X-ray unit and operating theatre. It was returned to the Hampstead guardians after the war and was thenceforth called New End hospital. In 1929 it was taken over by the L.C.C. and in 1938 was a general municipal hospital with 260 beds, including 26 for children and 19 maternity, and out-patients' and casualty departments. The premises were old and on a restricted site, but the maternity beds in particular were much needed. Management was taken over by the N.W. regional hospital board in 1948, and the X-ray and physiotherapy departments were enlarged. Thyroid surgery was developed from 1932, attracting foreign observers, and by 1955 the world's most modern radio-active iodine isotope unit had been developed in the basement. By 1958 it was under the Archway group hospital management committee, with 221 beds for acute cases. In 1968 the hospital was transferred to the Royal Free teaching hospital group. When the new Royal Free opened in Pond Street in 1974, New End, where a new geriatric unit had been opened in 1972, was left as a geriatric hospital, with 143 beds in 1978 and 127 in 1985. The desire to close it when facilities at Pond Street should be available, first expressed in 1945, was reiterated with the opening of the Royal Free, and in 1986 plans were being completed, amid much opposition.
