  • Notes
    • My grandfather, William Brown was the grandchild of George Frater. My grandfather, William, was born in 1883. He came to Canada supposedly alone and I am not sure of the year. He made is way to the Yukon and worked as a gold prospector and for the Northwest Mounted Police as they were know in those days and later became the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. When the first world war broke out my grandfather travelled to Victoria, British Columbia and signed up with the Highland Scots (Army) and returned to England and saw action in France. In London, England he met my grandmother Lily Mason. They were married in 1918, they had an infant son William Henry and came to Canada in 1920. My grandfather had every intention of returning to the Yukon but upon landing in Vancouver my grandmother was said to say that she had come far enough so they settled in Vancouver, B.C. They had 2 more children Douglas Aiken and Beverly Jacqueline (my mother). Evidently, my grandfather never spoke of his early years in Scotland and my mother wrote a bit of a family history stating my grandfather had 1 brother John and 1 sister Grace and that his father was the gamekeeper on the Selkirk estate. In 2003, on a trip to England I also went up to Scotland for a few days, visited the Family History Society and was quite dumbfounded when I found out in fact my grandfather was not from a family of three children but there were 8 children.
